Cataract Surgery

At Medical Vision Institute, we tell our Lexington, KY patients that when their cataracts begin to cause vision loss that interferes with daily activities or reduces their quality of life, it is time for cataract surgery.

Cataract Surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures performed today. It is generally performed as an outpatient procedure and is the number one therapeutic surgical procedure performed on Americans age 65 and older. Cataract Surgery today is straightforward, often takes less than 15 minutes to complete, does not require any sutures and recovery time is minimal. It begins by creating a tiny incision in the eye, in which a tiny instrument is inserted to break up the cloudy lens using ultrasound waves so it can be easily removed. This process is called phacoemulsification. After the removal of the cataract, Dr. Dudee places an intraocular lens (IOL) in place of the natural lens that was removed. Patients that have cataract surgery can elect to have a premium lens implant, which can reduce or even eliminate the need for reading glasses or bifocals following the procedure.
