Acute Closed-Angle Glaucoma – Care Instructions

Acute Closed-Angle Glaucoma – Care Instructions

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases in which pressure builds up in the eye, damaging the optic nerve and causing a loss of eyesight. Closed-angle glaucoma blocks the movement of fluid in the eye. This raises the pressure inside the eye. Closed-angle glaucoma almost always comes on very fast, with pain in the eye and blurry vision. These symptoms are often brought on by entering a dark room or using eyedrops that dilate the pupils.
Delaying treatment can cause permanent damage and even blindness. Treatment for glaucoma cannot reverse vision loss that has already occurred, but it can delay or prevent further vision loss.
Follow-up care is a key part of your treatment and safety. Be sure to make and go to all appointments, and call your doctor if you are having problems. It’s also a good idea to know your test results and keep a list of the medicines you take.

How can you care for yourself at home?
Take your medicines exactly as prescribed. Call your doctor if you think you are having a problem with your medicine. You will get more details on the specific medicines your doctor prescribes.
Use eyedrops exactly as directed by your doctor.
Ask your doctor if you can take an over-the-counter pain medicine if needed, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or naproxen (Aleve). Read and follow all instructions on the label.

When should you call for help?
